Description
The Edison mansion has always been a creepy old house on the edge of town. There have been rumors of strange experiments going on and of odd creatures living amongst the Edison family. There is even a story that a meteorite once crashed near the home nearly 20 years ago. More immediately, a girl named Sandy has gone missing from the local highschool and her boyfriend Dave swears that he saw Dr. Fred abducting her. Dave knows that he cannot do it alone and will need help from two other students if he has any hope of infiltrating the mansion and rescuing Sandy.
Players start by choosing two students to accompany Dave to the Edison mansion, and can then switch between these three characters at will. Most actions are carried out by selecting verbs on the screen and applying them to an object (such as "OPEN Door"). Each character maintains a separate personality and may have a different way to solve a problem from his classmates. Thus many of the puzzles can be overcome in different ways depending on the character being used. If any one of the kids are captured by the Edisons, they are thrown into the dungeon and must be rescued themselves by any character who still has their freedom.

This version appears to be cracked (and not very well either)
Unless I'm mistaken, this version has been cracked to get around the security door copy protection: You can either enter the correct code, or any code as long as you get the last symbol *wrong*.
Unfortunately, this was done by modifying one of the game's scripts, and that script is apparently used for *every* keypad in the entire game. I've never actually played the whole thing, but I've verified that i was able to call nurse Edna by just picking a phone number at random.
Annoyingly, the version that is currently being sold on GOG (and apparently also Steam) suffers from the same crack. The only uncracked version I've seen for sale is the one included as an Easter egg in Day of the Tentacle Remastered. That one bypasses the copy protection too, by leaving the security door open, but that was done without changing the data files.
(The original Day of the Tentacle included an older, even-lower-resolution version of Maniac Mansion as its Easter egg.)
I've reported the issue to GOG, but if they won't/can't fix it I'm going to submit a patch to ScummVM to undo the damage. Which is not ideal, because some may still want to be able to play it in DOSBox.

You'll need this for the security door!
Great game, completed with Razor with the help of the Green Tentacle!
Posting a review as to say that you'll need the "Nuke'M Alarms Reference Guide" to get past the security door in the MS-DOS version of the game. It's a fairly standard enter a code copyright protection system that was common on adventure games in the 80's/90's.

All credits for the reference guide go to whoever uploaded it to OpenRetro. Also, the reference guide works perfectly on MS-DOS even though it's from the Amiga version of the game. I had no issues with it anyway!

Still No Way to Save Game
The updated version of the original Maniac Mansion. Biggest difference to note are the updated graphics, but if you're on
archive.org playing old MS-DOS games, do graphics really matter to you? Really?
Unlike the original game, use the arrow keys to move the cursor and the enter key to select.

Get ScummVM
This is one of the best adventure games ever made (and its creators Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick are releasing a follow-up game, Thimbleweed Park next year), but works perfectly with the ScummVM emulator unlike here. ScummVM removes the anti-piracy steel security door codes and the cursor does not malfunction. Also it runs Monkey Island, Loom, Day of the Tentacle, and all the other classic LucasArts adventure games that aren't available here.

This is not Day of the Tentacle
The game has the bio for the the sequel to Maniac Mansion Day of the Tentacle. Though the game is the remake of Maniac Mansion. Also you can not use the mouse. Press shift+ m to use the keyboard.
